What to Do After Hail or Wind Damage
Stay safe first
Stay clear of downed power lines, broken glass and anything hanging loose. Don't climb onto a wet roof or ladder in the wind.
Photograph everything
Take date-stamped photos and video of every side of the house, windows, siding, stucco, gutters and anything hail dented, like the AC unit or mailbox. Photos taken right after the storm help your claim.
Stop more water getting in
Cover broken windows and open holes if you can do it safely, and keep receipts for anything you buy. Most policies expect you to prevent further damage.
Call your insurance company
Report the storm damage promptly and get a claim number. Check your policy for its filing deadline and your deductible.
Get an independent inspection
Have a licensed local contractor inspect the walls, not just the roof. Dallas does this for free and gives you photos and a written scope.
Watch out for door-knockers

What Utah Storms Do to Your Exterior
Hail damage to stucco and siding
Hail leaves impact marks, chips and hairline cracks in the stucco finish, and dents or chips fiber cement and other siding. The damage is easy to miss from the ground and often shows up after the next freeze opens the cracks wider. Dallas checks every side of the house up close and photographs each impact.
Wind-driven rain behind stucco, EIFS and windows
Strong summer winds push rain sideways into any gap: window perimeters, vents, light fixtures and roof-to-wall transitions. EIFS is especially vulnerable. Water behind the wall may not show inside for months. Dallas finds the entry points before any wall is opened.
Freeze-thaw cracking and flashing failures
Water expands about 9% when it freezes. A small crack from a hailstorm takes in water, freezes and gets bigger every winter. Flashings bent by wind or debris split at the bend. Dallas traces this secondary damage back to the storm that started it.
Flash flooding at the base of the wall
Monsoon storms send water against stucco at ground level. Blocked or buried weep screed, common on older Utah homes, traps it at the bottom of the wall. Dallas repairs the damage and restores proper drainage at the base.
How to Spot Hail Damage on Stucco and Siding
Signs on stucco
Round impact marks or chips in the finish coat. Hairline cracks spreading out from a point. Knocked-loose texture or bare spots. Dark spots where the finish has been broken. Cracks at window corners that weren't there before the storm.
Signs on siding
Dents, cracks, chips or holes in fiber cement, vinyl or wood siding. Chipped paint that exposes the board underneath. Warped, buckled or loose pieces after high winds.
Signs on windows and trim
Cracked or broken glass, torn screens, dented metal cladding and damaged window seals. Bent flashing above windows and along the roof line.
Clues that tell you hail hit
Look at soft metal: dents in gutters, downspouts, the AC unit and window screens show the storm's size and direction. Check the south and west sides first, then look in late afternoon, when low light makes impact marks easier to see.

Rebuild the exterior
Stucco is repaired or resurfaced with a Senergy base coat, embedded mesh and a new finish. Damaged areas are carried to a natural break so the texture and color look uniform. Or the damaged walls are re-sided with James Hardie. Damaged windows are replaced and flashed into the new weather barrier.

Repair
Small, scattered damage on sound stucco. Impact points and cracks are repaired and blended. Patches may not match the rest of the wall perfectly.
Resurface
Widespread hail marks or cracking across a wall. Repairs are made, then a new Senergy base coat with embedded mesh and a new finish go over the whole side, so it looks uniform.
Re-side with Hardie
When a wall is badly damaged or you want to change the look. Damaged walls are re-sided with James Hardie fiber cement siding.
Watch Out for "Just Paint Over It" Quotes
