The Oakley Rodeo began in 1930 in a meadow roped off with a snow fence. Today it's PRCA-sanctioned with a purpose-built arena seating 5,500 — drawing top cowboys from across the country every July 4th. Tickets sell out every night.
Oakley sits where the Weber River runs through town and scenic Weber Canyon Road follows the river to its headwaters. Smith and Morehouse Reservoir is 15 miles up the canyon.
The Kamas Valley was summer country for Ute Indians before Mormon pioneers arrived in 1858. The old Weber River Indian Trail ran right through what is now Oakley — honored by a 1939 Daughters of the Utah Pioneers monument.
